Macy Clinton, Niece Of Bill And Hillary, Living On Food Stamps

Macy Clinton, 18, the daughter of Bill Clinton's brother Roger, tells "Inside Edition" she needs government assistance to eat.

"It's hard because I'm a Clinton too, but I have to be on food stamps just to try to make it day by day," she said in the interview.

The teenager says Roger Clinton, who was confirmed as her father by DNA testing when she was 6, has only met her a handful of times and has given her nothing to live on. "My father told me that he would have a trust fund ready for me whenever I turned 18 for college," she said, "and I don't have any of that money."

For the time being, Macy Clinton is using a government benefits card to get free food at her local grocery store. Her mother, Martha Spivey, claims that trust fund or no trust fund, Roger owes $30,000 in back child support. She has an old voicemail message from him expressing regretful attempts to send money.

"It makes me really mad. It makes me hurt," Spivey said. "She's your child."

Currently a cosmetology student with an unspecified part-time job, Macy Clinton told "Inside Edition" she intends to live up to her family name. "I refuse to lose everything. I'm going to do it.," she said. "It's just a lot harder for me."

Ex-Rikers guard file federal suit for being fired over trying to sneak a peek of Lil Wayne

A former Rikers guard says she was canned after a bad rap - a claim she tried to sneak a peek at Lil Wayne in lockup.

Amelia Negron, who is preparing a federal suit against the city, said union higherups forced her to falsely confess she was trying to star-gawk.

"I don't even like rap," said Negron, 33.

"I like rock and alternative music and didn't know much about him when they said I tried to see him. None of it's true."

What really happened March 10 is that she popped her head into the unit where the performer was being held to see a colleague, Negron said.

"The door to the area was unlocked, and so I went in to say hello, and that officer said, 'Hey, you can't be here. We've got a celeb here.' I said, 'Okay, no problem,' turned around and left," Negron said.

She said that, after the short exchange, her superiors claimed she was trying to cozy up to Weezy.

"We did nothing wrong, but we were threatened with criminal charges, transfers, suspensions," she said.

Correction Officers' Benevolent Association President Norman Seabrook told her he would take care of things if she just admitted she was spying on the "Lollipop" singer, Negron claimed.

Seabrook said that's a lie.

"I wasn't the one who went into an unauthorized area. That wasn't me; that was her," he said. "The only reason I got involved is because they were going to suspend her."

On April 19, the city Department of Correction fired Negron, claiming she had missed too many days of work.

Negron, who was hired in 2008, contends the missed days were for an injury she suffered at the firing range, when she was struck in the hand and chest by another officer's gunfire.

"I was injured, eventually had to have surgery on my left hand, and they knew that all along," she said.

But sources said Negron violated sick leave policy four times and had been out for 91 days during her short tenure.

Negron plans to file a federal suit, claiming she was the victim of discrimination and harassment.

A Correction Department spokesman noted Negron was a probationary employee and said her firing was "entirely appropriate."

SUSPECT: How much money do you need to be happy? Hint: Your sex life matters more

How much money buys happiness? A wide body of research suggests the number is approximately forty thousand dollars a year. Daniel Gilbert, professor of psychology at Harvard University, says once you have enough money to meet basic needs – food, shelter, but not necessarily cable —incremental increases have little effect on your happiness.

Aaron Karo, comedian and author of the forthcoming book, Ruminations on Twentysomething Life, responds to the number with, “If you want to draw a line in the sand, happiness is having enough money so you don’t have to move back in with your parents."

To someone who just spent four years in college living off nine-thousand-dollar loan stipends, an increase to forty thousand means a lot – moving from poverty to middle class. But it’s a one-time rush. After you hit the forty-thousand-dollar-range money never gives you that surge in happiness again.

Twentysomethings who are looking for happiness from their careers will benefit from research about their parents’ choices. Richard Easterlin, professor of economics at University of Southern California says previous generations have proven that our desires adjust to our income. “At all levels of income, the typical response is that one needs 20% more to be happy." Once you have basic needs met, the axiom is true: more money does not make more happiness.

So then one asks, what does matter? The big factors in determining happiness levels are satisfaction with your job and social relationships. And in case you found yourself slipping back to thoughts of salary, according to Easterlin, “How much pleasure people get from their job is independent of how much it pays."

Unfortunately, people are not good at picking a job that will make them happy. Gilbert found that people are ill equipped to imagine what their life would be like in a given job, and the advice they get from other people is bad, (typified by some version of “You should do what I did.")

Gilbert recommends going into a career where people are happy. But don’t ask them if their career makes them happy, because most people will say yes; they have a vested interest in convincing themselves they are happy. Instead, try out a few different professions before you settle on one. For college students, Gilbert envisions this happening with part-time jobs and internships at the cost of “giving up a few keggers and a trip to Florida over spring break." But even if you wait until you enter the workforce, it makes sense to switch from one entry-level job to another; no seniority and scant experience means you have little to lose. So it’s an ideal time to figure out what will make you happy: Use a series of jobs to observe different professions at close range to see if YOU think they make people happy.

It’s simple, proven advice, but few people take it because they think they are unique and their experience in a career will be different. Get over that. You are not unique, you are basically just like everyone else. Gilbert can, in the course of five minutes, rattle off ten reasons why people think they are unique but they are not. For example: We spend our lives finding differences between people to choose teachers, band mates and spouses, so our perception of peoples’ differences is exaggerated… And then Gilbert gets to grapes: “If you spend seven years studying the differences between grapes, no two will look the same to you, but really a grape is a grape."

PALO ALTO, Calif. & SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--HP (NYSE: HPQ - News) and Palm, Inc. (NASDAQ: PALM - News) today announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement under which HP will purchase Palm, a provider of smartphones powered by the Palm webOS mobile operating system, at a price of $5.70 per share of Palm common stock in cash or an enterprise value of approximately $1.2 billion. The combination of HP's global scale and financial strength with Palm's unparalleled webOS platform will enhance HP's ability to participate more aggressively in the fast-growing, highly profitable smartphone and connected mobile device markets. "Palm's innovative operating system provides an ideal platform to expand HP's mobility strategy and create a unique HP experience spanning multiple mobile connected devices," said Todd Bradley, executive vice president, Personal Systems Group, HP. "And, Palm possesses significant IP assets and has a highly skilled team. The smartphone market is large, profitable and rapidly growing, and companies that can provide an integrated device and experience command a higher share. Under the terms of the merger agreement, Palm stockholders will receive $5.70 in cash for each share of Palm common stock that they hold at the closing of the merger. The acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions, including the receipt of domestic and foreign regulatory approvals and the approval of Palm's stockholders. The transaction is expected to close during HP's third fiscal quarter ending July 31, 2010.

Palm's current chairman and CEO, Jon Rubinstein, is expected to remain with the company.

Gene that allows growing a new head identified

British boffins say they have identified the key "smed-prop" gene which allows Planarian flatworms to regenerate any part of their body following an injury - even their brains. The discovery is seen as a step towards regeneration therapy for humans in future.

Top bio-boffin Dr Aziz Aboobaker and grad student Daniel Felix, who carried out the new research, say that the discovery of "smed-prep" unlocks the mechanisms by which the hard-to-kill Planarians grow new muscle, gut and brain cells from stem-cells which are present even in adults. Even more importantly, it seems that the information contained in smed-prep also makes the new cells appear in the right place and organise themselves into working structures - as opposed to nonfunctional blobs of protoplasm.

Understanding the process completely in worms, according to Aboobaker, is a necessary prerequisite for making it happen in humans. Another cunning worm trick he wants to get to the bottom of is the method by which the Planarians cope with rogue stem-cells producing defective cells - regeneration gone wrong, after all, in basically cancer.

The doc suggests that it may be possible in future to simply grow new organs and limbs for injuried or sick humans - even, perhaps, to repair their damaged brain in situ. This would be preferable to removing a duff brain and growing a new one, as happens when a planarian worm's head is cut off.

Army lost a test vehicle: US hypersonic glider flunks first test flight

The unmanned Falcon Hypersonic Technology Vehicle 2 (HTV-2) is designed to fly through the upper reaches of Earth's atmosphere at speeds of up to Mach 20, providing the US military with a possible platform for striking targets anywhere on the planet with conventional weapons.

The HTV-2 was launched last week aboard a Minotaur IV rocket from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, according to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).

The test flight called for a 30-minute mission in which the vehicle would glide at high speed before splashing down in the Pacific Ocean, north of a US military test site at the Kwajalein Atoll.

The glider separated from the booster but soon after the signal vanished, a spokeswoman said.

"Preliminary review of data indicates the HTV-2 achieved controlled flight within the atmosphere at over Mach 20. Then contact with HTV-2 was lost," Johanna Spangenberg Jones, a spokeswoman for DARPA, told AFP.

Malcolm X killer freed after 44 years

(CNN) -- Thomas Hagan, the only man who admitted his role in the 1965 assassination of iconic black leader Malcolm X, was paroled Tuesday.

Hagan was freed a day earlier than planned because his paperwork was processed more quickly than anticipated, according to the New York State Department of Correctional Services.

Hagan, 69, walked out of the minimum-security Lincoln Correctional Facility at 11 a.m. The facility is located at the intersection of West 110th Street and Malcolm X Boulevard.

Hagan had been in a full-time work-release program since March 1992 that allowed him to live at home with his family in Brooklyn five days a week while reporting to the prison just two days.
